The book that saved Britain’s canals
First published in 1944, Tom Rolt’s book ‘Narrow Boat’ was the catalyst in the restoration of Britain’s canal system which by the 1940s was falling into almost terminal decay. CRT has worked with the History Press to present a new 70th anniversary edition, which is fully illustrated with over 20 previously unpublished photographs from the Rolt family archives, plus 80 illustrations. The book has a new foreword by Canal Laureate and boater Jo Bell and new cover and illustrations by renowned canal artist and print maker Eric Gaskell. As many of you will be aware, Eric is a good friend of the museum and has held two exhibitions at Ellesmere Port, and assisted us with some other projects.
The book is available to buy exclusive from the Canal & River Trust website shop from 29 May price £14.99 (plus p&p).
Eric has produced a limited edition of 25 prints of the cover picture which can be viewed, together with his other works, on his web site www.canalprints.co.uk.
